Lynda, Type 1 Daughter

_____

My entire world stopped the moment I heard my daughter had diabetes, I just wanted to bundle her up and take it all away.

We began adjusting to a new way of life. I wrote a carb diary so meal times were easier, as the months went on she could estimate just by looking at food, no book and no more help needed.

That’s when I felt I could breath, she had her life back and was in control, we even started laughing again.

I remember one day…

I was downstairs putting the decorations on the Christmas tree when I heard a banging noise, I thought what on earth is going on upstairs? It then dawned on me, has she gone low? I ran upstairs shouting are you ok? A mumble came from the bathroom, I opened the door to find my daughter banging a broken brush on the floor. I shouted her dad to bring a sugary drink and a snack while I sat her down in the bedroom. It wasn’t long before she was back to normal laughing saying,

‘I made a fool out of myself there, sorry about the brush.’

Tom, Type 1, Diagnosed at 11

I have a few funny stories.

A few years back I was with my partner at the time when my sugars plummeted. Realising I was acting strange she took me to the kitchen and proceeded to feed me sugar, straight out of the pot from a spoon! I was blowing the sugar back at her, it was going everywhere.

Let’s just say she wasn’t best impressed!

This story is about an orange. You may remember it all too well?

_

When I was first diagnosed I remember sitting with this orange, over analysing it being taught how to inject, worrying about doing it wrong (It’s a piece of fruit!)

When you’re first learning everything is overwhelming, but looking back at this it makes me laugh.

I almost feel sorry for the orange.

Dani, Type 1, Diagnosed at 18.

____

I remember waking at around 2am thinking ‘goddamn it I’m low.

Now in my head I jumped up and ran down the stairs within seconds.

___

But in reality…

___

I stomped falling foot to foot across the landing until I reached the stairs. Here I clung on for dear life fumbling down, somehow finding each step on the way.

By the time i got to the kitchen the dog was up waiting for me, Oh how sweet (you would think.) I slumped onto the floor grabbing some food. As soon as it was open…

___

He ran off with it!!

___

This happened around 9 years ago. My family still get a giggle from it today.
